After having 12 children of her own and assisting her daughter with her first grandchild, Sara Hecht was sure about one thing. Having children was rewarding but also extremely overwhelming! Sara wanted to start a program that would help young Jewish moms who had recently given birth and were in need of assistance. "Especially, in the first couple of months, when the mom is tired and recovering, getting support and help is paramount," says Sara.
And so, BATIM was born in January of 2017. BATIM is an acronym for Bringing Assistance To Infants & Moms.
So many women, overwhelmed with childbirth, can become overly stressed. BATIM was started to help these women. In a city like San Francisco, which has many single moms and newly arrived couples, with little or no family support, the BATIM project is both welcomed and crucial.
Most of the volunteers are moms themselves, and have a lot of experience. Whether it is comforting a crying baby or simply being a listening ear, the volunteers come with one goal; to help the mom in any way they can. They assist by holding the baby, so that the mom can make dinner, rest up, or simply have some time to herself. They also assist with other siblings so that Mom can focus on her newborn. Although the program entails a one hour commitment of the volunteer's assistance, many volunteers choose to stay for a longer period of time. J. was a single mom who had recently given birth and had no support. "BATIM was a lifesaver! Literally! Tali came over today and was so sweet and helpful. Thank you so much!! This is so incredible!"
It is a relief to know that in the Jewish community, there are people who care. Warm individuals who will support and lend a helping hand to those in need. BATIM is continuing to expand, reaching out to more and more Moms and Volunteers. If you are a Mom who is pregnant or have recently given birth, or would like to volunteer to be someone's angel, sign up on the top right corner of the page.
Together, we can help more Jewish Moms.
